2023 Storm-Damaged Roads
The Roads and Airports Department is working as quickly as possible to permanently repair roads that were damaged during the storms in December and January. Damage was concentrated in the Santa Cruz Mountains and San Antonio Valley east of Mount Hamilton. All roads damaged by the storms have been partially reopened. Roads staff will update this webpage regularly to keep residents informed of the status of repairs.
The County Office of Communications and Public Affairs produced a video about the work Roads personnel did to protect the community during this winter’s storms
Mines Road: Repair Status
On Feb. 7, the contractor started work at the first location on Mines Road. On Feb. 17, the contractor completed installation of the new culvert pipe, including placement of base rock cover, and metal plates. These metal plates allow for one lane of travel through the site until final paving can be completed. Completing the paving depends on weather conditions - successful asphalt placement requires dry and relatively warm weather. Final paving has been delayed due to cold, wet weather. It is anticipated that paving will be completed by the end of March.
The same contractor is scheduled to work on repairs at the second location on Mines Road, which is currently open with one lane of travel. New culvert pipe has been ordered. However, delivery is expected to take four to five weeks, due to supply chain issues. When the contractor receives the pipe, they will re-mobilize, and repair work will commence. This work will necessitate a four-to-five-day full road closure. We will provide as much notice as possible of this closure and keep it to an absolute minimum.
